242nd Signal Battalion NYARNG

 

Organized 12 October 1921 in the New York National Guard as Combat Train
portion of Headquarters Detachment and Combat Train, 2nd Battalion, 104th
Field Artillery, an element of the 27th Division, at New York, NY. In 1929,
station relocated to Jamaica, NY.
Inducted into Federal Service 15 October 1940 at New York, NY. The 27th
Division reorganized and redesignated 1 August 1942 as the 27th Infantry
Division. Reorganized and redesignated 1 September 1942 as Headquarters
Battery, 104th Field Artillery Battalion, an element of the 27th Infantry
Division. Inactivated 31 December 1945 at Fort Lawton, WA.

Navy Unit Commendation, Streamer Embroided "Eniwetok Atoll"
Converted, reorganized, redesignated and federally recognized 9 February
1948 as 42nd Signal Company at Jamaica, NY; concurrently relieved from
assignment to 27th Infantry Division and assigned to 42d Infantry Division.
Reorganized, redesignated 16 March 1959 as Headquarters and Headquarters
Company, 242nd Signal Battalion, New York Army National Guard, Hempstead,
NY and with organic elements concurrently organized, Co A and Co B at
Hempstead, NY and Co C at Huntington Station, NY.
Federally mobilized for participation in Operation Graphic Hand during the
federal postal workers strike, from 24 to 30 March 1970.
The Battalion was called into state active service on 19 April 1979 for
Operation Golden Plum. During the New York State correction officer's
strike, the 242nd served for 14 days operating Arthur Kill Correctional
Facility at Staten Island, NY and was again mobilized for Hurricane Gloria
in October 1985.
Reorganized 1 September 1990 with HHC stationed at Hempstead, NY, Co A (-)
stationed at Hempstead, NY, Det 1 Co A stationed at Huntington Station, NY
and Co B and Co C relocated to Delaware under the command and control of
the 198th Signal Battalion. Unit members were again called to state active
service in December 1992 in support of the Nor'easter which hit the
communities on the north shore of Long Island.
Deactivated 1 September 1993 with members of HHC, Co A (-), and Det 1 Co A
reorganized into the 101 st Signal Battalion as Company C (-) stationed in
Freeport
